Continuing our 7 part Blog series looking at how pure essential oils can help to balance chakras via massage or diffusion. Click to learn more.

The roots of the chakra system lie in ancient Hindu texts of knowledge. Translated into English, chakra literally means ‘wheel’ or ‘wheel of life’.

Some say it is a reflection of the unified consciousness of humanity.

Our chakras consist of seven centres of life force energy, each of which are thought to play a part in the health of our mind, body and spirit.

Various methods of meditation and yoga are employed to help people open and balance their chakras and it’s here where pure essential oils can be used to assist the practice.

Before you balance any other chakras it’s imperative to ensure that your 1st chakra is fully aligned. Check out my previous blog to learn more about this.

Here’s the lowdown on the 3rd chakra:

The Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Location: Just below the naval (though there are some different views regarding its location)

Colour: Yellow

Yoga Poses: Warrior pose, boat pose and sun salutations.

This chakra acts as the power centre for your core self and your identity.

Issues and traits associated with this chakra include your personality, your will power and self-discipline along with responsibility and self-confidence.

As the solar plexus governs the digestive system, this can cause physical issues such as stomach and liver problems, constipation, diarrhea or dependency on food when out of balance.

Because the energy harnessed by this chakra represents your core self, imbalances within it can cause us to feel self-conscious, to be self-critical and to lose confidence in what our purpose in life is.

Essential oils can offer subtle assistance in healing our chakras through choosing the appropriate oils to address the physical and emotional issues associated with the particular chakra. Based on this, essential oils which can offer help in balancing the solar chakra are those which help promote feelings of self-confidence, self-worth and those which can be helpful in treating issues within the digestive tract.

Oils which can be used to treat issues associated with and help energy flow through the solar chakra include:

Fennel: when it comes to aiding digestive issues, Fennel is often the first natural remedy that is considered. Whether consumed in its tea form, added to a dish or used as an essential oil in massage, Fennel is a valuable oil in helping stimulate the digestive system in various ways. It can act as a gentle laxative, tonic, carminative and all round help for the stomach and its functions.

Geranium: Geranium is one of those oils which (if you find the aroma pleasing) has the ability to promote emotional strength during tough times. It is often used to treat those suffering from hormonal fluctuations and its sweet, floral scent is thought to induce a sense of deep relaxation, helping to lift our mood and promote positive thoughts.

Grapefruit: grapefruit is another ‘feel good’ oil! It also acts as a stimulant for our digestive system and can help keep our metabolisms running smoothly. Alongside this it also acts as a natural antidepressant and can help combat mental fatigue and stress. Dilute and massage over the chakra point to enjoy its subtle benefits.

Others essential oils which resonate with the solar chakra include Black Pepper, Sandalwood and Chamomile Roman

You may wish to diffuse a chakra energising blend for this particular point using the following oils:

3 drops Grapefruit, 2 drops Sandalwood and 1 drop Black Pepper – to stimulate, awaken and revive.
